6. So, how do I know that the inspector for Home Works Inspection Services is a trained professional home inspector?

•Phew. I thought you would never ask.
First, let's begin by introducing  you to Dale, the inspector for Home Works Inspection Services. Dale has both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education degree from Acadia University. Throughout his early professional career, he was involved in education, mostly in the science and math fields.
Because of it being a long time interest, in the early 80s Dale became involved in home construction, including designing and actual involvement in the building process. This included masonry work, wood frame construction, electrical installations, plumbing, and the more generic handyman involvement.

IF YOU ARE BUYING A HOME, YOU NEED A PROFESSIONAL CAPHI HOME INSPECTION
4. As a potential home buyer, I understand that my real estate agent is looking after my best interests and wouldn't try to sell me a home with any potential problems.

5. I've been told that only rich people get their homes inspected.

•Possibly the best response might be to look at the facts.

Generally speaking, Home Inspectors are not trained nor qualified to act as Real Estate Agents. Likewise, Real Estate Agents are salespeople, usually not trained nor qualified to do professional home inspections (the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors [CAPHI] does not permit its members to be active real estate agents because of the obvious potential for conflict of interest).
Therefore, recommending a buyer purchase a home without first seeking a Professional Home Inspection would be as unethical as a Home Inspector suggesting a negotiating price or whether or not to purchase the home, to a client. A client would have every right to expect much better from a professional.
Some definitions useful to home buyers:
Real Estate Agent
These are salespeople working on a straight commission. Simply, they earn their money when a home is sold/bought.
Listing Agent
Simply, the listing agent is the salesperson representing the seller of the home and thus has the duty to the seller of getting the highest possible price for the home.
Selling Agent
This agent is responsible for finding and showing new homes to the prospective buyer. It surprises some home buyers that the obligation of the Selling Agent is to get the highest price possible for the seller.
Buyer Broker or Buyer Agent
A relatively new concept and not yet widely common. This commission real estate sales person negotiates on the buyer's behalf. You'll note that this is in major contrast to the duties of the Listing and Selling Agents.
With this information, it should now be clear to home buyers, who in the real estate transaction, is looking out for the buyer's best interests.

Either someone wasn't being truthful with you or they simply didn't know. As even the most complicated home inspection would be only a fraction of the cost of commissions going to real estate agents, in comparison a home inspection is a tremendous deal. Also, as home inspectors are not paid based on whether or not the home is sold/purchased, we are in a much better position to be completely objective in our report and dealings with you, the client. Also, as we aren't permitted to do repair work for you (thus, posing a potential conflict of interest), there would be no reason to suggest that a system is better or worse than is actually the case.
